About the MtG Health Index

Learn more about our mission, the team, and how this project came to be.

Our Mission

Our mission is to provide Magic: The Gathering players, content creators, and enthusiasts with a clear, data-driven, and objective way to understand and discuss the health of various game formats.

We believe that by quantifying different aspects of a metagame—such as deck diversity, archetype dominance, and player engagement—we can foster more informed conversations and contribute to a deeper appreciation of the game's evolving landscapes.

This project aims to be a valuable resource for the community, offering insights that go beyond anecdotal evidence or individual tournament results.

The Idea

The MtG Health Index was born from a passion for competitive Magic and a desire to see its complex metagames analyzed with more rigor. We noticed that discussions about format health were often subjective and sought a way to bring more objective data into the conversation.

Inspired by analytical tools in other fields, we decided to develop a composite index that could synthesize various data points into a more holistic view of a format's vitality. This involves scraping publicly available tournament data, processing it through our defined health factors, and presenting it in an accessible way.

The Team
  • Jon Smallhill: Developer & MtG Legacy player. Responsible for the creation of this idea. I'm definitely looking for collaborators to make this the #1 platform for MtG format monitoring. There's so much more we can analyse and improve!
  • Kalle Codausi: A long-term Legacy player, skilled data hacker, and expert car mechanic who serves as an important advisor to this project.
