Modern: Aggro strategies dominate diverse format
Analysis from July 19, 2025

Modern's looking pretty good right now, although the aggro strategies are definitely beating down, shaping the format with brute force. The top decks are fast and efficient, so prepare to play against them or join the fray.

The format health is solid, with a Final Health Index of 79.4. The Archetype Distribution Score is a whopping 93.9, and Event Growth hits 93.5, confirming plenty of action. But, while paper play is growing at nearly 6% monthly, MTGO is shrinking by over 2%, so choose your battlefield. Diversity is decent at 74.1, but lower than some previous years – we need more rogue decks popping up to really shake things up.

Boros Aggro is the big dog at 16.9%, with Death and Taxes at 11%. After that, 4/5c Aggro is at 6%. UR Aggro and Affinity clock in at 4% each. Those numbers show the dominance of speed and efficiency in the current meta, with the format’s overall leaning towards Aggro with 50.1%, above its 5 year average of 43.7%. Control’s down at 17.8%, with combo holding steady around 32%.

The community's buzzing about Rakdos Evoke and Fury. Players are debating optimal builds and whether Fury needs a ban. Amulet Titan is making a comeback, and Hammer Time variants are popping up. Orcish Bowmasters is still a hot topic, both for its power and its price. No B&R changes are needed for now, per WotC, as it seems the meta is self-correcting itself thanks to the player adaptations and card innovations.
