A snapshot of Pioneer from October 28, 2025.
Pioneer’s Final Health Index lands at a solid 68.3 this week, suggesting the internal structure of the format is robust. However, this number masks a growing problem: player participation. While the B&R Health Score of 75.0 reflects recent format stability—highlighted by the lack of any changes in the latest announcement—the event and player growth metrics are deeply concerning, with Paper participation declining by -5.4% monthly and Event Growth scoring a poor 35.9. The metagame itself is healthy, but the player base is visibly shrinking.
The metrics confirm that diversity (Metagame Diversity Score of 73.0) and archetype balance (88.1 Archetype Distribution Score) remain strong below the surface, but the current metagame is heavily weighted toward speed. AGGRO currently sits at 69.4% of the super-archetype breakdown, substantially higher than the historical average of 63.8%. Pioneer is currently a race, and if you’re not prepared to fight on the battlefield quickly, you are likely falling behind.
Looking at the Top 10, the aggressive focus is clear. Red Deck Wins is the top dog at 13.6%, closely followed by Rakdos Aggro and Arclight Phoenix, both tied at 12%. Seven of the top ten strategies are explicitly Aggro variants, defining the current speed of play. This dominance aligns perfectly with community discussions focused on the "Big Four" archetype hierarchy (Rakdos Midrange, Boros Convoke, Amalia Combo, and Izzet Phoenix).
Players are scrambling for technology to break the aggressive lock. Rising strategies include Azorius Control, which is gaining traction by packing sweepers and efficient spot removal like Get Lost, specifically aiming to answer the wide boards of decks like Convoke. Gruul Vehicles is also seeing increased experimentation, relying on cards like Reckless Stormseeker and Esika's Chariot to maintain resilience against removal-heavy matchups. Despite the push for innovation, the community remains polarized, with many threads complaining that Amalia Benavides Aguirre’s fast, resilient combo ability is stifling competitive space at the very top. Pioneer remains active and rewarding, but the hunger for a substantial metagame shake-up is palpable.
