Premodern: Format thriving; aggro gaining popularity
Analysis from July 2, 2025

Premodern's looking healthy this week. Player and event numbers continue their climb, pointing to a thriving format. The metagame is relatively balanced, with classic strategies holding their own and room for innovation.

Our key health metrics tell a good story. The Final Health Index is sitting pretty at 90.1. Archetype Distribution scored a solid 96.4, and Event Growth is also high at 94.3. Player Growth is a respectable 87.4, showing the format's attracting and retaining players. The numbers confirm what we're seeing anecdotally: Premodern is doing well.

Looking at the Top 10, Aggro is dominant with Sligh (RDW) at 7.8% and Goblins at 7%. Elves and UG Madness also clock in at 4% each. Terrageddon is also at 4%. Other decks like Deadguy Ale, White Weenie and Mono Black Aggro are still viable, making appearances lower on the list. Comparing the super-archetypes, Aggro holds 38.6%, Control has 35%, and Combo is at 26.4%. That's a slight nudge towards Aggro compared to the historical averages, where Control has been slightly ahead.

Reddit is buzzing about Standstill's impact, with players debating its long-term effects. Accumulated Knowledge is also seeing a resurgence. Control strategies are definitely making a comeback, and Aggro decks are adapting with sideboard tech to fight back. Mana denial strategies with Wasteland and Price of Progress are also gaining traction. The community is also closely watching the prices of Premodern staples, like dual lands and Pyroblast, indicating a healthy level of engagement and investment. No B&R changes to report, so the format is evolving organically.
