A snapshot of Premodern from July 28, 2025.
Premodern's in great shape! We're seeing solid numbers across the board and a lively community. No new bans to discuss, just good old-fashioned Premodern Magic.
The health metrics tell a clear story: this format is thriving. The Final Health Index of 87.7 is excellent, driven by a strong Archetype Distribution Score (95.5) and Event Growth Score (94.3). Player growth is healthy too, growing 2.7% monthly, showing real interest. The metagame diversity score is at a respectable 82.3.
Goblins is still the king, claiming 8% of the metagame, followed by Sligh at 7%. Terrageddon is sitting in a comfortable third place with 4%. Elves and RG Aggro each take 3%. The super-archetype breakdown is pretty balanced, with Aggro (35.3%), Control (35.7%), and Combo (29%) all within striking distance of each other. Compared to historical averages, combo is slightly up, and aggro and control slightly down.
The Premodern subreddit is buzzing as usual. Players are digging into Stiflenought and control builds, trying to refine lists and figure out the best sideboard options. There's always a search for new tech to punish slower control strategies, and debates about the value and impact of format staples like Force of Will and Wasteland. The fact that the community focuses on card interactions, and is always trying to identify underutilized cards that could find a home in the format, shows a desire for innovation.
