Premodern: Participation vanishes despite metagame balance
Analysis from October 7, 2025

Premodern is walking a tightrope this week. While the format shows near-perfect internal equilibrium, reflected by an overall Final Health Index of 56.5, the underlying participation numbers are catastrophic. The key story isn't metagame dominance, but the complete disappearance of reported activity, driving both Event and Player Growth Scores to a flat 0.0.

Looking past the concerning -100.0% growth trends, the structure of the metagame remains phenomenally balanced. The Archetype Distribution Score hit a massive 95.4, showcasing a current split of 33.4% Aggro, 33.5% Control, and 33.1% Combo. This historical equilibrium is a pillar of the format's appeal, proving that Premodern offers something for everyone, backed by a solid Metagame Diversity Score of 84.1.

The Top 10 Decks list, however, confirms that the most successful strategies belong to the Aggro category. Sligh (RDW) leads the charge at 8% of the meta, followed closely by Goblins at 6%, and Mono Black Aggro at 5%. These aggressive strategies set the pace, requiring players on Control and Combo to bring serious answers. Elves and Madness round out the next tier, ensuring that if you aren't prepared for a turn-four kill, you aren't playing Premodern correctly.

Community discussions reflect this tension, centering on the efficiency of Red Deck Wins and Goblins versus established control shells like UW Landstill. Many non-aggro pilots find the consistency of Goblin Lackey starts frustrating. On the flip side, BG Midrange, or ‘The Rock,’ is seeing heavy optimization, successfully leveraging cards like Pernicious Deed, Duress, and Spiritmonger. Additionally, UG Madness is re-emerging as a strong tempo threat, utilizing Merfolk Looter and Circular Logic. Control pilots still rely heavily on Standstill to lock down games, while the financial stability of staples like Wasteland and Force of Will reinforces the format’s ongoing appeal.
