Vintage: Format needs shakeup, lacks diversity
Analysis from August 13, 2025

Vintage feels a bit stuck right now, with the same big players dominating. The format’s got decent legs, but the lack of real shakeups is getting old. We need something to break up the monotony of the top decks.

Our Key Health Metrics paint a clear picture: a Final Health Index of 68.9. Metagame Diversity is low at 39.9, while Archetype Distribution is high at 92.1, suggesting an unhealthy concentration of power. Event and Player Growth scores are strong (85.8 and 83.7, respectively), meaning people are playing, just not necessarily with diverse decks. The B&R Health Score is a middling 65.0.

The decks to beat are still Hatebear (13%) and MUD (12%). Control is represented by Esper (9%) and Dimir (8%). BUG Midrange is only showing up at 3%. Notice how Aggro accounts for 32.1% of the meta, while Combo is at a whopping 45.8% – a significant jump from the historical average of 34.7%. Control is down compared to the 5-year average.

The community is buzzing about Mishra's Workshop and Doomsday. Players are tweaking their lists to fight the mirror and hate pieces, showing those decks aren’t unbeatable. Orcish Bowmasters keeps popping up in conversations as a meta-defining card, punishing those draw-heavy strategies. The B&R announcement's decision to do nothing really just says "wait and see," leaving many feeling underwhelmed and hoping the next set will fix the stagnation.
